I woke up this morning to some sad news: Jennifer Morrison, the actress that plays Emma Swan in ABC’s Once Upon a Time, has decided not to return to the show for its seventh season.
She posted on Instagram that it would be best for her to move on, both, personally and creatively and I get it, but, at the same time, I’m yelling “What about the show?!” because, let’s be honest, there is no OUAT without Emma! She’s the focal point, so I just don’t see how the show will survive without Jennifer’s involvement.
I read somewhere that the co-creaters, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, plan on creating stories that focus more on the secondary characters, which could work, but I don’t know if I’ll be 100% invested in that. I love watching The Charmings battle evil and it will be extremely hard to get my fix when The Savior is no longer present to, well, save.
It’s just heartbreaking because I don’t think the fans (myself included) will be feeling the show without Emma, so, with the season six two-hour finale airing next week, I definitely believe that the end is near.
However, with the slight chance that they do get renewed for a seventh season (because, apparently, the show’s ratings haven’t been good), how will they write Emma off? Will Evil finally succeed or will she ride off into the sunset with her new husband? Only time will tell, but I hope that it’s done right. Meaning, they better not kill her off! She’s come too far and been through too much, so they need to find a way to have her leave Storybrook, preferably with Hook.
Anyway, what do you all think? Do you think OUAT will be able to survive without Emma and, if so, what would you like to see happen? Also, how do you think she’ll be written off?
I’m curious, so I can’t wait to read your responses!
Once Upon a Time‘s two-hour season six finale airs next Sunday, May 14, at 8 p.m. on ABC.
A Little Extra: Emma and Hook just got married, so how can she leave?! They were finally on their way to getting their happy ending!
